The functioning of the Health Services is one of the more significant contributions of the Limassol Municipality to the town and its citizens, with a view to ensure sanitary conditions at the required level.

The Limassol Municipality pursues its course over the last years putting into action the following measures; the Municipality proving sensitive and contributing greatly towards this direction may be easily understood.

• The Limassol Municipality has bought 14 new refuse cars aiming at improving the collection system of refuse. It has therefore upgraded its contribution reinforcing significantly the technical mechanical equipment to better serve the public

• A mechanical equipment purchase (four machines amounting to more than £250.000) has helped improving the functioning conditions of the department and particularly the administration of the refuse; the method of burying the refuse into landfills is actually more efficiently applied.

• The street cleaning process has globally been upgraded by recruiting women as street sweepers while pupils are also employed during the summer period. The collection of useless items from the neighbourhoods has become a regular operation

• A platform, which is expected to be received soon aims at moving as efficiently as possible the vehicles

• A noise-measuring instrument has been bought with a view to improving the monitoring of noise levels in Limassol

• The Limassol Municipality assumes the task to clean sites and public open spaces upon citizens’ request against an acceptable remuneration, although such cleaning processes is the exclusive responsibility of the sites’ eventual owners. The Municipality has therefore created an ad hoc department equipped with three tractors.

• The Municipality deploys an intense effort in relation to the enlightenment and public awareness campaigns, which are carried out annually, especially at schools, in the teachers’ speeches, in the brochures on various issues concerning health, environment etc; such great campaigns have been on the 15th of October 1999 and in November dealing with cleaning.

• Yet regarding the conservation of existing and the creation of new parks and green space, landscape designs have been drawn and a tree planting process has been launched affecting three main road networks. The drought, which is observed, has been the brake to the global project.

• The government has conducted a research, covering Limassol within the framework of the development and the application of the refuse-recycling project.

• Karnayio area has undergone an improvement and cleaning process to a certain extent. However, the efforts will be intensified.

• A study with a view to improving the functioning of the storm water gathering system has been conducted in co-operation with the Limassol Amathus Drainage System Council

• A modern device for cleaning the sand at the beach has been bought.
