Welcoming speech by the Mayor of Lemesos, Mr Andreas Christou at the 21st International Symposium on Distributed Computing, to be held on Monday, September 24th, at Apollonia Hotel at 1.30 p.m.
Firstly I would like to express my pleasure for being invited to attend the 21st International Symposium on Distributed Computing and to welcome you to Cyprus and to Lemesos (Limassol).
It is a great honor for greater Lemesos to host this important event and the honor becomes greater when we realize that this symposium takes place in Cyprus for the first time.
Distributed Computing is indispensable these days. We use distributed systems to communicate, coordinate and compute. We can do our bank transactions at leisure from home by running a session with the bank's server. Our children can pursue distant-learning to all interesting topics via their laptops.
All kind of information is integrated and shared on the internet, one of the most miraculous scientific achievement of our times.
All these are possible only because of the scientific success achieved on the foundations of computing in a distributed way.
I am very glad that the city of Lemesos hosts one of the most prestigious symposia that represent these achievements.
I would like to congratulate the Cypriot organizers of the symposium and to wish you all the best, hoping to see you in our city again soon.
