Speeches by the Mayor

Greeting of the Mayor of Limassol, Mr. Andreas Christou, at the Global Russia Business Meeting 2013, organised by Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency (CIPA), on Sunday 14th of April 2013, at 7:30pm at Four Seasons Hotel.

Mr President,

Dear Ministers,

Distinguished guests,

Dear friends,

We welcome you to this special gathering and thank you for your overwhelming presence here.

My warm congratulations to the protagonists and organisers of this Global Russia Business Meeting and particularly the Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency and the Horasis Global Vision Community. I note that this is the first major business event to take place after the recent Eurogroup decisions which have decisively affected the economic situation of Cyprus.

Your presence today is considered to be a reaffirmation of your trust towards the business environment of Cyprus and an expression of active solidarity to businessmen, businesses and the ordinary people who are being tested at this moment. This is also a confirmation that the relationship between Cyprus and Russia, our people and our countries, is firmly grounded on long-term bonds of friendship and cooperation, bonds that have neither an occasional nor an opportunistic character.

Limassol, the major business centre, and all of Cyprus, remain open and welcoming to all. Despite the crisis, the comparative advantages of Cyprus are still there and continue to be based on the people, our history and traditions, as well as on the experience and knowledge gained during the past 45 years. Throughout this time, our island has gradually developed into an international business centre. It is certain, that by detecting hydrocarbon deposits at the Cyprus EEZ these potentials gain a different dimension.

We sincerely regret that our business friends have suffered losses as a result of the latest events and we express our steadfast sympathy and support.

We believe that we can, all together – the state, the society, the local authorities, businesses and entrepreneurs - stand on our feet and rebuild what we formerly had, but now on a better and a more rational basis.

We are by your side, to the extent of our powers. Our door is, and will always continue to be, open.

We wish you all the best in your tomorrow deliberations and we wish good health and strength to you all.
