Applying for a civil wedding
In accordance with the Marriage Act 2003, people wishing to conduct their civil wedding in Cyprus are required to apply themselves to the Marriage Officer of the Municipality of their choice, in order to follow the typical procedures prior to their wedding.
The typical procedures to be followed:
- GIVE NOTICE FOR WEDDING CONDUCT (Normal Wedding Application)
- APPLY FOR A SPECIAL LICENCE FOR SWIFT WEDDING PROCEDURE
In the case of giving notice, the wedding cannot take place 15 days prior to the agreed date, and for this reason, the interested parties must reside in Cyprus for at least 20 days.
In case of emergency, however, the interested parties can apply for obtaining the SPECIAL LICENCE by communicating with the Marriage Officer who will allow them to conduct their wedding, no earlier than the following day. Nevertheless, the interested parties should apply initially by contacting the Municipality of their choice.
If either of the parties applying for a civil wedding is not a widow nor a widower, and is under 18, then a written attestation of the father is required, if the latter has deceased or is unable to attest, then, the written attestation of the other parent; or if both are deceased, or are unable to attest, then the written attestation of the legal guardian is required. The attestation must be given to the Marriage Officer, before the issuing of the relevant certificate or before the granting of the Special Wedding Licence.
The interested parties may choose whether their wedding will be conducted by the Marriage Officer at his or her office or with the latter’s licence, by an Official Representative of their religious doctrine.
Both parties should present their travel documents or legal identification papers i.e. passports.
Finally, they must present some evidence which will proves that they have not been previously married, in other words: a certification of single status validated by the recognized authority of their country, i.e. the registry under the Ministry of Interior/ Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Municipal Authorities – Embassies, etc., in case of divorced parties, divorce papers fully endorsed;, in case of widowhood, the death certificate of the widower or widow. It is essential that the original certificates/ documents or certified copies are presented.
These must be drawn up or translated in Greek or English and validated by the principal Authority or the Embassy.
The fee payable is as follows:
- €128 in the case of the Normal Wedding application, where the wedding cannot be conducted earlier than 15 days.
- € 282 in the case of speeding up the actual wedding date.
- € 14 for issuing the true certified copy of the marriage certificate.
- € 130 as an additional fee for a wedding scheduled on Saturday, Sunday or at a time outside working hours.
