The candidacy of Limassol

The city of Limassol is developing, evolving, changing. The City is planning and building its future with foundations laid in its history and culture. For millennia it constituted a beacon in the area of the Mediterranean and a cornerstone of the “ancient continent”. The passing of the ages has not altered the importance and significance of the City which like a small oasis at the crossroads of the three continents of Europe, Asia and Africa; from the depths of antiquity to the middle ages and the crusades, to the silk route and Eastern spice route, the Venetian and Genovese trade hegemony, up until modern times, has played and continues to this day to play its important and hospitable role at the meeting point of the civilisations of East and West, and in the formation of the history of the region.

Our ambition is that the European Capital of Culture programme for 2017, be written in the annals of the history of Limassol, as one of the most important events of the City and the whole of Cyprus, and for it to constitute a “cultural compass” for the following generations.

Great emphasis is placed upon the drawing up of a remarkable programme and an original series of events with demanding specifications of artistic and cultural quality, and with the possibility for a successful implementation by the relevant “Limassol 2017” organisational body, at the same time assigning particular importance to the required organisational structure and the required budget.

From the preparatory stage for the pursuit of the title the exiting partnerships in Europe are being utilised, while new partnerships are also being created and all together are thinking constructively and creating new ideas, many of which shall be put into practice through the “Limassol 2017” programme.

The acquisition of the title of European Capital of Culture shall afford the opportunity and also the challenge, to the City and the District to highlight and promote its long history and its culture, its wealth and its diversity as well as the common characteristics of European cultures, to promote cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue.

Limassol shall continue to constitute an “oasis” at the same crossroads, where the Europeans of today and other travelers meet to view and study with interest the historic and cultural traces and effects left by their passage by all previous visitors, and to partake in the local events that shall connect history with the future and the Mediterranean with Europe.

It is the vision of Limassol to build the future based upon its achievements, its history and its traditional values, utilising its important role as the bridge between Europe and the Mediterranean, and with “Culture as a compass” through balanced cultural, economic and social development to maximise human welfare and quality of life.
