LIMASSOL MUNICIPALITY
HEALTH SERVICES
FOR A HEALTHY TOWN

Τhe World Health Organisation defines health as the situation of full physical, psychical and socio-economic welfare and not just not being ill or a disabled person. Upgrading public health infrastructure in our town is also sensitising the inhabitants themselves to their fixing new health behaviour standards and forming an environment-friendly conscience.

How Public Health could be achieved as an objective?

1. By keeping the building plots and other public or private places clean preserving this way public health.

  • By keeping clean the neighbouring plots to ours, preserving, therefore public health throughout the year and in no case should we transform them into a refuse place by rejecting there, waste like debris, useless items, cuttings, etc.
  • We should not transform the neighbouring plots to ours into open-air warehouses to store there various items, like containers, construction material, abandoned vehicles etc.
  • Should we be the landowners of such plots, we have to inspect the place regularly and take care of removing any dry vegetation or any other useless items and material from them, in compliance with article 91 of the Municipalities Law on causing trouble.

2. By moving away any abandoned vehicles and other items.

  • We should not abandon any vehicles or other items outside our house, on the pavements or other open public or private places for more than three weeks, in compliance with the article 92A of the Municipalities Law.
  • By caring for removing such items in our possession or asking for the Municipality’s assistance in order to these items being suitably disposed.

3. By keeping household refuse properly

  • By placing the refuse in plastic bags and tying them up tightly. We should pay particular attention to the refuse, which is seeping.
  • We should never leave the bags exposed, in order to avoid their being torn by cats as well as their being attacked by insects or rodents. We should leave the bags in suitable refuse bins, which we should keep always closed.
  • We should put these refuse bins in front of our house in the evening, anticipating the predetermined throwing off day and never before that.
  • Should we stay in a multi-storey building, then we should follow the under-mentioned code of proper use of the wheeled refuse bin.
  • We should place the waste in the refuse bin, after having put it in solid bags tightly tied up.
  • We should pay particular attention to the steeping waste. Liquid waste spoils and brings about infections.
  • We should never leave waste outside the refuse bins.
  • We should avoid rejecting carrions in the bin, for they will unavoidably cause trouble.
  • We should never put in the garbage trucks any debris or construction material, because they cause damage to them, which means damaging or destroying municipal property.
  • We should keep the refuse bins in a suitable position outside the multi-storey building’s area and never in the street or on the pavement.

4. By respecting the indicated measures while construction or restoration works are carried on.

  • We should fully comply with all the health-related terms and conditions evoked on the construction licence issued by the Municipality.
  • We take care about transporting away from the town the excavated ground immediately after its being accumulated.
  • We should place the useless material in a suitable bin for this purpose, which we should bring away once it is full.
  • We should not place construction material in public areas. It is illegal and dangerous indeed.
  • We should avoid burning construction material, like bags, wood etc.
  • We should avoid the noisy works during collective siesta hours.

5. By eliminating the mice and preventing mosquitoes from hatching

  • We should preserve the lagoons and the sink water-trap of the drainage system of the tightly closed estates.
  • Wire-wrapped ventilation pipes should be placed at the drainage system accesses and waterway outlets in order to prevent mosquitoes from passing through.
  • We should avoid keeping stagnated waters in any kind of open bins or pans like flowerpots, bottles, barrels, car tyres etc, for long periods of time. Mosquitoes are usually hatched in stagnated waters.
  • We should dry fountains and ponds or any other place in our garden, where water is accumulated, stagnating there.
  • We should keep our estates and yards clean and rid of useless material, in order to prevent any rodents from appearing.
  • We should bar with cement all the rodents’ nests, which are detected.
  • We should not breed animals or birds in our yard.

6. By disposing the sewage properly

  • We should take care of our drainage system functioning properly.
  • The liquid water should properly be flown to the drainage system, comprising what is thrown from households (laundry, washing machine, etc)
  • We should avoid water being drained in the streets, because it causes stink and unhealthy conditions around with unpredictable consequences for the public health and the environment.
  • Liquid waste should not be flown in the pluvial waters system of the S.A.L.A

7. By raising dogs properly

  • We should never leave our dogs straying about.
  • The dog’s house should be kept clean.
  • We should keep an eye on avoiding its getting dirty, public places
  • We should keep an eye on avoiding its being noisy in the neighbourhood.

Limassol Municipality and Public Health
(sensitizing, adopting a strategy and acting)

The Limassol Municipality has recruited staff for the municipal health services, in order to determine the targets as well as the strategy to deal with issues related to the public health and improving the image of Limassol with respect to a clean town, where its inhabitants may live in healthy conditions.

Today, the local authorities have established a well organised system handling among others issues related to a healthy environment, eliminating the infectious diseases risk and diffusing an appropriately protection system, inspecting the public and private estates with respect to the healthy conditions they offer, a food and water supply control and the public awareness on health issues.

However, should you need any further information or making complaints on public health, you are kindly requested to contact the health services dialling the numbers 25-362996 / 25-362648 or call the complaint office of the Municipality dialling the 25-884331

The Limassol Municipality is actually invited to upgrade our town’s infrastructure, because it is the vision and the request of all of us.
The Municipality plans the relevant strategy for this purpose, which the public health issue is comprised in, as one of the key factors to achieve this objective.
However, upgrading the public health depends on the citizens’ collaborating with the State competent divisions as well as the local authorities.
The inhabitants’ involvement in this context is achieved indeed,

  • By being sensitized to the common interest,
  • By developing new healthy behaviour standards.

Recently, the Limassol Municipality is sensitized to all these topics and makes action plans, which is good to start with.

Let us, therefore build the Limassol image as the town deserves it indeed!
