ADDRESS BY THE MAYOR OF LIMASSOL, MR. ANDREAS CHRISTOU
AT THE FINAL STAGE OF THE EUROPEAN PROGRAM «EUROPE FOR CITIZENS » WITH SUBJECT «THE SOCIALIZATION OF DEPENDANT PEOPLE THROUGH THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF THE EUROPEAN ROADMAP FOR THE GENDER EQUALITY IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES»
19 SEPTEMBER, 2011

Dear Ms. Minister, Dear Deputies, Mayors, Municipal Counselors, Dear Vice Mayors and representatives of the Municipalities of Thessaloniki, Heraklion and Plovdiv, Dear participants of the congress,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome the final stage of the European Program «Europe for citizens».

In the occasion of the signing of the European Roadmap for the gender equality in the Local Communities, the Limassol Municipality decided to exploit this program choosing as a subject the socialization of dependant people (children, elderly people and people with special needs) through the practical application of the aforesaid Roadmap.

We have chosen Municipal Counselors and members of the Social Welfare Committee, who undertook the management of this program, representatives of the women’s organizations of the parliamentary parties, the guild women’s part, the businesswomen and the professional women’s union and voluntary organizations that are dealing with the program’s subject, to participate in our delegation.

Our goal was to give the opportunity to the persons that are directly involved to be informed regarding the practices and the programs of the other Municipalities participating in the program.

I ascertain that the program was a huge success, as all the participants showed great interest, all the speakers shared very interesting information and we were able to realize visits to institutes and day care centers in all the participant Municipalities.

I think that this program will be the start for an even better and closer cooperation regarding the social politic issues and more.

The findings, extracted at the end of this meeting, shall be the tool for the creation of those infrastructures and the application of those practices in order to achieve the desired result, that is the socialization of dependant people, the effacement of taboos and prejudices and, at the same time, to help the persons who watch over and look after dependant people.

Usually, they are women. Besides, this is expressly stated in the European Roadmap for the gender equality in the Local Communities.

As you have established during your previous visit in Limassol last April, the different institutes and day care centers, that you visited during a conducted tour, are all functioning by voluntary organizations and are partially financed by the State.
This makes us proud because voluntary work in Cyprus, and particularly in Limassol, is quite developed. And I take the opportunity to congratulate all the voluntary organizations and each and every volunteer for the selfless offer towards their fellowmen and to thank them for their determinant contribution in success of this program.

I also want to thank the other organizations participating in the program.
Last but not least I leave the representatives of the Municipalities of Thessaloniki, Heraklion, Crete and Plovdiv, Bulgaria who responded immediately to our invitation to the program and disposed a lot of time for its realization.

I believe that we met the requirements of the program and I am certain that we all obtain a lot from it.

I wish you all the best and every success in your efforts for the best possible social politic and prosperity for everyone.
