CONCEPT: This project is part of the Master
Plan dealing mainly with the town centre , thus extremely useful to
Limassol’s everyday life. The necessity of such a
project is essential for a complete approach towards the
followings :the transportation network ,the functional connection of
basic central areas ,the creation of parking places
in central spots, the development of the Marina ,the old port, the Medieval
Castle ,the zoo as well as other areas within the innermost parts of central
Limassol. Furthermore , the recreation of the Olympion
Coast will include the construction of a number of facilities offering
entertainment and relaxation to the residents
,while manifesting the beach as unique ,well known all
around Cyprus with a prevailing, though, local character.
OBJECTIVE: The basic objectives of the plan are the
followings:
- the creation of an organized beach which , in combination with a
pavement walkway ,will be of service to both bathers and pedestrians .
- the preservation of the local environment and coastline.
- the functional connection of the coast with the subordinate land
uses.
- the preservation and maintenance of the historical and traditional
characteristics of the area.
The connection of the road with the beach is done via
greenery and a bicycle track in combination with a pavement walkway. The
latter, which is an indispensable part of the new sea
front, will be a result of a careful design following
the natural flow topology through the trees. Part of the general objective
is the maintenance of the already existing trees growing sporadically as
well as an enrichment with traditional trees of the
area such as acacias and eucalyptus in various different spots .
The use of differing materials such as paving stones in the way
between the Frankish church and Enaerios area ,forms the image of a
unified square and at the same time, achieves
the visual and functional connection of GSO ,the
zoo ,the Municipal Art Gallery and Enaerios.
The proposed parking places to the north of the road and in the area
of Enaerios ,where a multistory parking spot is to be created , will
service up to 800 cars ,which is an imperative
need in the particular area. The installation
of specific facilities for the use of physically handicapped
and people with special needs is also required.
The historical ‘Akteon’ is to be restored to the eastern side of the
Reclamation and a wooden platform will facilitate the approach to the
land where there will be a restaurant and an
aquarium .A big wheel will be placed to the
side ,from where the visitors will have the opportunity to view the
seaside of Limassol as well as its hinterland.
LOCATION: Following a way from the west to the east of
the coast ,that is from Reclamation to ‘Holiday Inn’ hotel ,the vital
areas requiring reformation can be easily
identified as they are presented in this project.
The establishment of the Olympion Coast as a place with all the modern
conveniences to every visitor or bather ,pedestrian or organized group
is a vision of the citizens of Limassol. The
whole way will be a continuous change of
colours ,natural images and motifs as well as of a variety of uses .
Being interesting and attractive ,at every point, is the main
philosophy of the planning of the Coast.
